Maribor is Slovenia's second city of culture, commerce and education. It lies in the eastern foothills of the Pohorje Massif. Maribor hosts a great range of festivals and events. The most prominent being the Lent Festival which lasts for two weeks at the end of June, beginning of July. Slovenia's oldest city is Ptuj which is located 26 km southeast of Maribor and has to be the most appealing town with over two thousand years of history. Kranj and the Kamniske-Savinjske Alps - Kranj lies at the confluence of the Sava and Kokra Rivers and is Slovenia's fourth largest city. Mainly an industrial centre it does possess an attractive old quarter. Brdo Castle lies 4km north east of Kranj and is the country's most beautiful and elite presidential residence. |

Most certainly the regions highlight is the Logarska Dolina (logo valley). In the heart of the Kamniske- Savinjske Alps lies this most beautiful valley stretching some 7 KMs. Walking, horse-riding, rock climbing and cycling are among the leisure pursuits on offer. At the head of the valley the 90m high Rinka waterfall should not be missed. Most of the majestic peaks top 2000m and border lush meadows and forests. |
The lower Savinga valley is primarily known as the 'valley of hops'. At the heart of this landscape lies Celje home of the 'counts of Celje'. In the middle ages the counts were one of central Europes foremost ruling dynasties. The 12th century castle acquired a 14th century 'make-over' during their rule. This large fortification sits elevated 2KM South East of the town. Bordering the city lies the Smartinsko jezero lake which is the largest reservoir in Slovenia. Spa towns dominate this region with Rogaska Slatina and Olimia the most popular. Pohorje The best way to explore Slovenias 'bread basket' is by bike. This flat landscape lies in the eastern tip of Slovenia. Bordered in the south by the Mura River and by Austria, Hungary and Croatia this is the largest agricultural region in Slovenia. Many visitors are attracted by the thermal health resorts: Radenci health resort, terme 3000, Lendava thermal spa and the Banovci health resort. The quest for healthy being also extends to the regions culinary delights and excellent wines. |
